As of 1 January 2024, the amount of the Tourist Fee in Vilnius City will change
2023-11-08
In order to improve the tourism infrastructure of Vilnius City and strengthen its international competitiveness, by decision of the Vilnius City Council, as of 1 January 2024, Vilnius City tourist fee will amount to 2 EUR per person per night for any type of short-term accommodation service.
The amount of the tourist fee is based on the examples of foreign cities. In The Hague, so called pillow tax is 5.40 EUR, in Bologna and Basel it amounts to 4 EUR, in Eindhoven and in Bratislava it is 3.50 EUR per night, in Prague it is 3.25 EUR and in Amsterdam it is 3 EUR. In some foreign cities, a percentage charge is applied on top of the tourist fee, depending on the booked room type. This year, the tourist fee has been increased up to 2 EUR in Palanga and, from next year, it will also be increased in Druskininkai.
According to a decision approved by the Vilnius City Council, the funds collected from the fee are used for four purposes: promoting the city; improving the city’s international reach; promoting conference tourism; and enhancing Vilnius’ attractiveness to tourists.
The collection of the tourist fee is the responsibility of both legal entities (hotels, guesthouses, etc.) and physical accommodation providers (private entities) renting accommodation in the territory of Vilnius City Municipality.
Accommodation providers are obliged to inform tourists about the change in the amount of the fee in Vilnius as of 1 January, to collect the fee and to transfer the amount collected each month to a bank account specified by the Vilnius City Administration, by completing a data declaration.
Accommodation is declared and the tourist fee is paid only online by registering with the Tourist Tax Declaration and Payment System. Declarations for overnight stays in the previous month are due by the 10th of the following month, and the transfer of the Tourist Fee is due by the 25th.
The 2 EUR fee will come into effect for all guests who check in at one of Vilnius’ accommodation facilities from 1 January at 12:00. This means that earlier arrivals in Vilnius, when tourist continue their stay on or after 1 January, will be subject to the 1 EUR fee in effect until 31 December 2023.
The tourist fee does not apply to the groups of exemptions granted by a decision of Vilnius City Council. More information about the tourist fee in Vilnius City can be found here, and any questions can be addressed to citytax[eta]vilnius.lt.
